If it's gotten thick it's no good. Trash it and buy a new one. A trick to keep it from getting thick is to NOT pump the wand in and out when you use it. It pushes air into the container, which will eventually make the mascara thicken, then dry out.

If the mascara is more than three months old, replace it. However if it is new, you could try adding a couple of drops of water. Also clean the wand off well before using. Mascara can develop bacteria and if you use it you can get an infection in your eye. Change mascara often especially if you wear contacts.

I would recommend pitching it in the trash and getting a new one because mascara can go bad just like alot of other makeup can. I believe you are only supposed to use mascara for up to 6 months after the first use.

Please DO NOT listen to the person who told you to use saliva to thin the mascara.
Also, do not add water to it either. Both of those things will contaminate it with bacteria and cause major problems for your eyes.

If you are really stuck, though, in an emergency, you could try thinning it with some mineral oil.

Unfortunately, you will have to toss that mascara and get a new one for your own safety.

In fact, it is recommended that you replace your cosmetics every 6 months to prevent infections due to bacteria buildup.

sounds like it may have gotten old or air in the tube. don't pump the wand into it, that forces air in and dries it out faster. Sounds like the best thing is to get a new one. Loreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black at drugstore for $7 is one of the best. Good luck!

You should replace it and not add anything to it. You should replace mascara every 3-6 months for hygiene reasons. Your mascara is probably dried out.

Thrown it out and buy a new one. Mascara is not made to last more than 2 months. It can hurt your eyes.

Well, if it's a new mascara then you can warm it up with your own body heat. Try putting it inside your jeans pocket. If your mascara is old then just get a new one.

How old is it? You might want to toss it and get a new one. Mascara can get kind of funky after a few months.
Try Maybelline Great Lash.
