Yes, they had many more words in vernacular (look it up!) usage in the "olden days" than we do now. Of course that was when a high school education actually prepared one for life in the real world.

And when we said 'We had a gay old time' it meant nothing like it does nowadays.
Incidentally, Cockney Londoners use several long words to enhance their language: words like 'diabolical' 'insurmountable'..........etc.
