The NHL might make a comeback in Kansas City, Mo., now that Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux is exploring his options about moving the team.
The Kansas City Scouts left for Denver in 1976 after a two-year stay in which the team won 27 of 160 games. The renamed Colorado Rockies didn't fare much better and departed for New Jersey in 1982.
But Kansas City appears to be a viable option for the Penguins in the wake of the Pennsylvania Gaming Commission Board's rejection of a slot machine license application by Isle of Capri Casinos, which had pledged $290 million for an arena in Pittsburgh to replace 45-year-old Mellon Arena.
The Penguins' lease expires in June and Kansas City's new $276 million Sprint Center is scheduled to open in October.
William "Boots" Del Biaggio III, who has a contract with the arena to operate an NHL team, is a limited partner with the San Jose Sharks and has had business dealings with Lemieux.
"Let's just say it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," Brenda Tinnen, general manager of the Sprint Center, told The Kansas City Star.
Houston, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Portland, Ore., and Winnipeg, Manitoba, also have been mentioned as possible destinations.
Del Biaggio, Lemieux and former NHL forward Luc Robitaille are investors with the Omaha Lancers, a junior team in the U.S. Hockey League, and Robitaille is an executive with Anschutz Entertainment Group, which will manage the Sprint Center.
PITG Gaming, which was awarded the slots license, has agreed to help fund a new arena for the Penguins, but only if the city and the team also contribute.
"I feel terrible for (Lemieux)," Penguins forward Mark Recchi told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "He's worked so hard to keep the team here and done everything right. I'd like to see him get rewarded for it. He's done everything in his power to keep the team here, and now it's out of his hands."
Ryan Malone, another Penguins forward, called the decision to reject the Isle of Capri application a "slap in the face" to Lemieux.

For those who are set on the fact that the Pens will never move and yada yada yada ....

Bettman's statement: “The decision by the Gaming Commission was terrible news for the Penguins, their fans and the NHL. The future of this franchise in Pittsburgh is uncertain and the Penguins now will have to explore all other options, including possible relocation. The NHL will support the Penguins in their endeavors.”

It doesn't mean the will move, it just means its a possibility.

Don't be blinded by your bias.

if they do move the top 3 city's are Winnipeg, Kansas City and Houston. and that ****** Gary Bettman will do everything in his power to not let the Pens move to Canada, that's why he stepped in last week to scare off Basillie's offer of the table because Bettman knew the Isles Capri wasn't 100% going to get the deal done which clearly didn't. and to let you all know Basillie was going to keep the team in Pittsburgh if the deal went through but it didn't, everyone is blaming Basillie but don't know that Basillie promised Lemieux he would keep the team in Pittsburgh, but the little ****** Bettman knew if the deal fell apart Basillie was going to move the team to Canada.

if they move, Kansas City, or Portland. I love my penguins though, and hope they stay here for ever. Its a crying shame that the Isle of Capri plan was turned down. 290 million dollars flushed down the toilet. The best course of action for them is to threaten to move, just to get a deal done with the city though.
