It is the longest night (most amount of darkness all year) and the shortest day (least amount of daylight all year). It is also the begining of winter.
This year December 21 is the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice, the shortest day—and longest night—of the year.

The length of days changes throughout the year. In the summer, the sun often sets after 9 p.m. In the winter, it may already be dark as you head home from school.

Day length varies because of the Earth's tilt.

The Earth travels around the sun. But the Earth does not orbit with the North Pole at the top and the South Pole at the bottom. Instead, the Earth is tilted slightly. Because the Earth is tilted, different parts of the Earth face the sun at different times of year.

What is a day? the determination of a day is the key.

December the 22nd is the longest day. The earth will take around around 24 hours and 30 seconds, to complete one rotation of its axis. If you are determining a day as a unit of measurement of time in relation to a 365 day year then the 22nd is the longest day.

If you are perceiving a day, as the hours from sunrise to sunset, then it becomes the shortest day of the year.

A day as a unit of measurement in time, and a day as sunrise to sunset are completely different definitions of the word day.

It`s definatly going to be the longest night of the year, it`s our works "DO" or bonding party with a lot of stuck up "suits" who just want to tell you how great they are and how well they run the company. Still it`s free and the christmas bonuses are paid out, so we`ll try and make the best of it.
