Gifts should never be given with the intent of getting one back. That being said, it is somewhat embarrassing when someone puts you in that position. Just tell them, " Oh thank you very much for the gift. I didn't get you one however because I wasn't aware that you wanted to exchange them."
This politely puts it back on them as their sole decision in giving you a gift.

just say thankyou and if you feel gilty get her/ he a girt but ifu dont feel close then just say thankyouand srry not 2 get her a gift
