it was originally this way when we first had typewriters, and they keys would get stuck together if you keyed them too quickly, and so they designed the keys the way it is today, if you notice the main keys you use are on the home row (center row) but still it is designed to slow the hands down, and they never changed it because everyone is used to it.

Urban legend as it, that is was done to slow down typists who might be too fast for the typewriters of the day, causing the keys to jam.
There are Dvorak keyboards based, on how often keys are actually used. However, for some reason or another, that layout never took off. People are too used to the qwerty layout

It dates back to the original typewriters, which were all mechanical. The most commonly used letters were spread out so that they would be less likely to cause a jam when typed in quick succession.

It is easier to use the letters that you would type the most in a very easy place on the keypad.

I've always wondered that myself!!!!!!I think it has something to do with the most used letters being in the middle or something like that I don't know though.
