What you're experiencing is pretty natural. When we go to sleep, our brains block impulses to our skeletal muscles so we are essentially mostly paralyzed (this is why you don't get up and walk around while you're asleep). I've experienced what you have before; I think that means you are in Beta sleep, which is the stage between wakefulness and dreaming. In this stage you're too sluggish to move, but you are still aware of some of your surroundings. It sounds like you are just staying in this stage of sleep longer than most people do most of the time.

You might want to do a search on lucid dreaming, which is a technique on how to be aware of the fact that you're dreaming and control what's going on. I understand that it can be very useful for getting rid of bad dreams.

Alot of time your dreams are your body's way of releasing stress and moving on. Sometimes scary dreams can be caused by eating to close to bedtime as crazy as it sounds. However, if it is something that you are really concerned with contact your doctor and they should be able to help.

Tell me the scary dream, and I can tell you why it happens.

For now, if you want to get rid of scary dreams, minutes before you go to sleep, just tell yourself you want to see those scary images again. by suppressing your thought, the dreams won't come, but that is only temporary help. You must tell your dream and find out the deep meaning of it first.

try covering yourself in scripture, use Levitus 26:6 and Psalms 91:11. say them outloud before you go to tsleep and see if this does not make the nightmare stop, on the nights you say them outloud.
