The word Easter is derived from the Greek word for Passover. The Gospels tell of the trial, crucifixion and rising of Jesus as having begun after the Passover Seder (the Last Supper) and culminating on the Sunday following.

I think many Christians forget that Jesus celebrated Passover. Easter is the celebration of of Jesus' ressurrection from the dead. Passover is a Jewish holiday recognizing the Jew's escape from Egypt.

Jesus's last supper was probably a Passover Seder. The Communion wafer is similar to Jewish matzoh.

The two holidays share a theme of redemption.

Easter is the Christian (celebration, remembrance, holiday) of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Good Friday), through Easter Sunday, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This period is known as Easter.
Passover is a Jewish (celebration, remembrance, holiday) before the time when the Israelites were traveling in the desert (40 years), to go to the promised land (Canaan) which is now Israel. Before the Israelites left Egypt (remember the movie, "The Ten Commandments), they were instructed to put blood (animal - goat or lamb's) on their door mantles. When the angel of death passed among the citizens, the first born of every household was slain (killed), as promised by Moses to the Pharaoh. The angel of death (passed over) the houses with the blood smeared on the mantles.

Passover is what the Jews celebrated from way back during the plagues in Egypt when God saved their first borns if they put lamb's blood over the door. Years later, Passover was the last meal that Jesus had with his disciples before he was arrested and later crucified.

The ancient Israelite Passover was the commemoration of the Israelites' physical deliverance from bondage in Egypt, Passover represents for some Christians a spiritual deliverance from the slavery of sin (John 8:34) and is, since Jesus' death, a memorial of the sacrifice that Jesus has made for mankind.
Also, in the same way the Israelites partook of the sacrifice by eating it that night, Christians partake of the sacrifice of Jesus by eating the symbols of his body and blood: the bread and wine.
