Which is correct? I bought milk, cheese, grapes, and bread.

Are you supposed to put a comma at the end?

The first one is right. There should be a comma before and.

When I was in school, I was taught to put the comma. For some strange reason they don't say it's necessary anymore. I think it looks wrong the second way.

Both are right, technically.

It all depends on where you are. I'm fairly certain that American English prefers the comma before 'and.' I think the British exclude it. I'm not sure about how other english-speaking countries do it.

Both are actually correct grammatically.

The second example is what is referred to as "the Oxford comma," according to "Eats, Shoots and Leaves."

Whichever one looks better to you is the style you should use. Neither is more right than the other.

I think both are correct actually. I always use the comma before and/or because I think that's how it should be, but technically it's not completely nessecary. You don't have to use both contractions, but I would if I were you.

the first one is correct. commas are placed between items in a series or list, and an "and" is placed before the last item
