Get a big roll of take and just keep getting it dusty and cleaning the hole. You would have gotten a cleaner hole by the time you reached the end of the hole.

First, quit feeling so bad! It's Xmas and the ring drop was 13 years ago!! Mom (and Dad) have long since forgiven you (or they should have); after all you were only 1! You're hardly qualified to be negligent when you're 1 year old, so PLEASE quit laying this guilt trip on yourself.
Forget the time goal of "by Xmas". Consider it a success if you get the ring anytime.
Now... I'm gonna go ahead and assume that that hole you
describe is one that the door latch pokes into (yes?); but
it seems someone bored all the way thru the door facing edge INTO the hollow region of the wall... which probably explains why you say the "...inside of the hole is very wide" ...so the hole itself is like 1/2 inch in diameter, drilled all the way thru the door facing, and the ring is definitely not visible. (You can blame whomever drilled all the way thru the door facing; they shouldn't have.)IF (emphasis on IF) this is the case then the likelihood is that the ring is sitting atop a
2"x4" lumber framing member to which are nailed sheetrock/plasterboard panels (usually 4' x 8'). Vertical framing members are usually spaced every 2 feet, or in some (load bearing) walls every 16inches. You and your dad might consider drilling a hole at the base of the wall several inches, maybe up to a foot from the door facing -- when I say at the base of the wall, I'm thinking
1&5/8 inches above the floor (so you're not drilling into
the 2x4 framing member). Enlarge the hole to something
rectangular (and readily patchable later) using a keyhole saw or a saber saw; then use that new larger hole to grope for the ring.
You and your dad might even make/locate this new
"accessibility hole" where it wouldn't be too visible or offensive, depending on which side of the wall you cut into.
Merry Xmas. (Please QUIT LAYING THIS GUILT TRIP ON YOURSELF.)

First off, I'd like to point out that if any sort of magnet scheme works, your dad either was conned, or really cheap! If the ring is made of any kind of self-respecting precious metal, i.e. gold or silver, it would not be attracted by any sort of magnet. Since obvious is a relative term in most cases, and I've seen some very dismal displays of intelligence on this site, believe me, I'm going to suggest some ideas that may seem obvious, but maybe you haven't considered. One suggestion would be to use a thin metal rod or stick with a piece of gum attached to the end, and attempt to stick the ring onto the gum. Since your description of the hole wasn't very detailed, I don't know how effective the gum would be. Another suggestion is to use the same general idea, only with two-sided tape. Depending upon the diameter of the ring, and how it is lying in the hole, you could design the end of the rod/stick to fit inside the ring and "fish" the ring out of the hole. A third suggestion is to attach a small diameter tube to a shop vac and suck the ring out of there. A fourth suggestion is to cut open the wall, get the silly thing, and give it back to your poor mom. What kind of child are you to deprive your precious mother of her cherished symbol of marriage for 13 years? But really, how hard would it be to fix the wall afterwards? You aren't decimating an entire wing of your house; a small cut in the wall would probably be sufficient. Then again, judging by your time line you are 14 years old, and might not have access to high enough quality tools to complete the job in a nice-looking way. Final comment: as a sign of growing up, most people start to take responsibilty for their own actions. It would be a great idea to do this for your mother, and will really show how much you care if you go to such great lengths for her. Merry Christmas!

It seems that if the hole is 3 feet OFF THE GROUND then you must have a raised wood floor. There should be a crawl space you can enter to get under the house to get the ring even if you have to create an opening to get into the area.

You tried things like hangers and pipe cleaners, but did you try a hanger or pipe cleaner with something sticky stuck at the end? Like say...a piece of chewing gum. If you can get a wire down the hole, put a piece of gum at the end, and hopefully the ring will stick to it and you can pull it out.

Try this - Pour water down in the hole and get rid of all the dust. Wait for it to dry and get a bunch of sticks... Put glue or something on them (Very Sticky) and keep trying...

I don't think there is any other way besides damaging the wall.....maybe you guys could send her on a vacation, and then get the ring out by damging the wall, re-build it, and when she comes back the the ring will be found AND the wall will be fixed! hey its worth a try! good luck!

Go dig that thing out, if its so important to you. Your mom probably doesn't care much for it, because she would have gotten it out herself. Good luck and be ready to pay for repairs on the floor.
