it sounds like goldfish really get things dirty quick and get too big to have that many in a 10 gal...im thinking that cold water fish may be more hearty than tropical....i would like to have at least 4, 5 fish...everyone has a different opinion about how much space a fish needs. thanks.

most freshwater fish are tropical, meaning they NEED a heater...your options will be much more open as to what kind of fish you can get if you drop the $10 on a 10-gal sized heater.

if you're really opposed to one, you can put a male and 2-3 female bettas in a 10 gallon tank. make sure that you have lots of plants (live ones keep the water cleaner, but they'll need a light source) so that the girls have places to hide from him if they need to.

other species that will do ok without a heater would be the very hardy species such as zebrafish. how about the glow-fish that are transgenic for red fluorescent protein? they're more pricey than regular zfish, but they really do look neat.

In a 10 gallon tank you can have 6-8 white cloud mountain minnows. These are a cool water fish and can tolerate a cooler tank.

Plattys are easy to take care of, Corydora catfish to keep the tank clean, Siamese Fighting FIsh(Bettas), but only one or they will kill each other. Plattys come in a ton of different colors also. Zebra Danios (sorta like a minnow). I think most of these would do ok without a heater also, though a heater is nice.

I have a 20 gallon tank and have 4 convict cichlids and a plecko in it. They all seem to get along pretty well and one of them even had babies not too long ago!
