If you are using a USB wifi adapter, you don't need an ethernet port at all.

There's no reason why you can't use wireless for a single computer network, It will be much slower, and more difficult to configure your router, but it will work.

You will need to use the Ethernet port to configure the router initially. Other than that you will be able to use the wireless, but at a loss of speed. Remember, cable connection is faster than wireless.

Basically, the chain goes as follows:

phone cable from wall goes into modem
> network cable from modem goes into router (wireless)

From there, you can have a network cable go into your computer OR use a wireless adapter to connect to the wireless router.

If the router is wireless and you have a wireless adapter on the PC, you don't need to use a network cable for the PC.

I would use Ethernet instead of USB. Ethernet is much much faster.

if you want optimum performance from your broadband connection you will use a standard NIC card and a wired connection to your PC.
