Lovely to hear. Your problem is that the tautness (if that is the word) is not constant - at times you are holding the wool too tight, then not tight enough. It will come with practice - don't be too ambitious at this early stage.

When we were kids (1940's) all the family would sit around the fire knitting socks - mom, boys and girls. When we came to the heels we would pass the knitting to mom or one of the older sisters who would do the heel and give it back. In this way we did all of the winter socks in a couple of days. Great times.....

, I have tryed to knit off and on for many years. I say tryed because many projects ended up in a yard sale as yarn. But this past year I started to really learn to knit ,some thing other than a pot holder. I found studying the stitches a huge help. Take on a small project and learn the stitch,s. Prat ice knitting and purling , holding the yarn and correctly working these basic stitches will help you with your stitches. So that they lay as they should.
And above all else buy a yarn easy to work with.
This is the first time I bought a good yarn. I mean all yarn is good yarn. But some yarns feel nice working with . It works up lovely and looks lovely when the project is done.
I bought one book on knitting socks . Ever one seems to take for granted you know how its done . But as a beginner I found my self frustrated , so the thing I found help full. Look up learning web sights.
Good luck and happy knitting

Just as acquiring speed in knitting takes time, so does acquiring a consistent tension. Keep knitting just to become accustomed to the feel of the needles and the wool. It'll happen for you if you just practise.

make sure the yarn is in back for a knit stitch and in front for a purl. Also make sure you wrap the yarn from right to left or your stitches will twist. My only tip is practice practice practice.
