and she is afraid to leave him in fear of what he may do. How do I encourage her while not coaxing her to run like all hell?

Maybe you should be encouraging her to 'run like all hell'- if he's abusive, drinks too much, a drug abuser- it may be the best thing you could do for her. She may not do it (that's another whole sad story) of course, but you would know that you tried.

I'm assuming that you have talked to her- tried to point out in a calm, logical way what it is you're worried about (I'm assuming it's abuse). If not, approach her, have some references in hand, the local hot-line # (if there is one) and be ready and willing to take her to a shelter if necessary (which means you'll have to know where it is). If the situation is bad, you need to do whatever you can and realize that she could pay with her life... Good Luck
