Dell. Unless you are willing to pay for the Care Packs & support for an HP. I work for a Technology Consulting Firm and HP is a pain in the *** to fix issues for you when you have to send it in, it'll cost you a butt load and then the part will go bad a few months later. There aren't really any other good lap tops in that price range. If you're willing to pay a couple hundred more...Toshiba is the way to go. Good luck!

I just bought a Dell Inspiron E1405 with a Core 2 Duo T5600,
1GB of RAM, a 120 GB Hard Drive, and a 9 Cell Battery for $799. Most computers with those specs were running for $1100-1200.
Go to dell.com and input the E-Value Code: 6F915-DNPCFY1. Highly recommend

In my opinion HP laptops are much better, especially the business ones as the support for them are excellent, i had a problem and they fixed it 2 days later by coming to my house. Dell have bad customer service, but both are reliable machines.

That depends on the specs. of the laptop.
The Dell Inspiron 1501 of 1505 are two good laptops for starters.

From HP, the dv2000t series are good laptops. (And cheap, too!) More info can be found at http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/store_access.do?template_type=computer_store&landing=notebooks&a1=Brand&v1=HP%20Pavilion&aoid=1426
Happy shopping!

I wouldn't buy either. I have a Toshiba Satellite Notebook PC, and i've had no problems with it at all. I keep it updated with everything. I've had it for almost a year, and it has given me no problems.
