Think about fishless cycling instead of putting fish through that and then having to do something with them once the tank is cycled.

I have used guppies and I have used feeder gold fish.

But I suggest that you treat the water before you put any fish in the tank.

Fishes have a slime layer that is completely stripped away when put in water from the Faust. The tank should be set up and run without any fish for a week or two. Treat the water and then add your fish.

Without fishes in the tank it will be easier to decorate, change your mind and change it again.

I've found that platies or mollys are great for cycling tanks. A small school of 3 or 4 should work just fine.

Salt of Fresh. I have both and have always got some cheap fish or slat and fresh to let the tanks cycle. That way if any dies its not to much out of your pocket!

actually i don't particularly reccomend fish like that because 1, they DO cost lots of money for just a cycling fish and 2 because if there IS something wrong with your tank they'll die.

personally, i use feeder gold fish, cheap and readily available.

If no longer, positioned the a number of previous substrate from you 20 gal in a mesh bag or piece of girls's stockings, rinse it in declorniated water, and positioned that on your new filter out. also, there are supplementations you may purchase that immediately inventory nitifying bacteria. in case you upload some vegetation, that could actually help scavenge the further nitrate besides. upload fish very slowly at first or you'll weigh down the organic and organic procedure. Get an ammonia try equipment and take a inspect on a daily basis for the first few weeks. If there is an ammonia spike, substitute 50 % of the water on a daily basis till it is going down. inspite of all this, i do not propose attempting to attempt this right away. You run the danger of stressing your fish and causing disease. better of success.
