wow you want a lot dont you babe, I have to go back lots of years now. I started work the year before and was married soon after. I earned £3.10 shillings a week That is £3.50 now. My first electric bill was for 17 and 6 pence which is now 75 pence. lol. The food bill was about £1.50 per week, 10 shillings for the rent which is 50 p now, and I still could afford to go out for a drink and meet friends. I used to drink guiness then and could get drunk buy 10 fags all from one pound. I feel very old now answering this but I am only in my 50's. Fish and chips was a shilling which is five pence now. It sounds like the advert on telly:- when I were a lad I could go to the shop and buy a stone of monkey nuts , get atram, get a new suit and still have change from a farthing. lolol My dad bought house for 1 thousand pounds and now it would cost you about £40.000. I hope this helps babe and if you want to ask anything I am pauline.neild@btinternet.com. Hope you get all you want babe. you make me feel old but I would like to help.

I started work that year as a secretary. My wage was £8 a week. My brother bought his first home that year, a two up two down terraced house for £1500.
