I lived in Dallas for 3 years and spent some time in Chicago and never been to LA and NYC. I definitely won't put it on the level of Chicago. It downtown is just a big office park so it's basically vacant at night and on the weekends. The museums are decent but Chicago's blow them away. Dallas DOES have some great shopping areas. The city has a certain flashy materialistic feel about it. I think Houston is the most comsopolitan city in Texas for what it's worth.

Depends on what you want. In terms of performing arts, Dallas has a very active theater and music scene and there is plenty do to here - more than you can humanly take in. In terms of visual arts, Ft. Worth is superior with better museums and collections only a 45 minute drive. Dallas has all the shopping anybody would want.
With no active, centralized downtown area where people actually live, Dallas isn't as vibrant a city as Chicago or NY. However there are rapidly changing "uptown urban" areas with a great street feel. There is an improving public transporation system here too.
I like to visit LA, Chi and NY, but Dallas is a nice mix of suburban living with all the benefits of a city available within a short drive.
Biggest downside? Limited parks and absolutely NOTHING of interest close by - no beaches, forests, mountains, hiking or anything much outdoors except manmade lakes.

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking. If you are talking about population, the answer is no. Dallas has a population of 1.2 million, ranking it the 9th largest in the nation; the Dallas metropolitan population is about 6 million. The other cities you mention are in the top three, with NY having around 8 million, L.A. having around 4 million, and Chicago having around 3 million. As far as the rest of the city goes, I would say that Dallas is comparable to other cities its size: We have traffic problems, pollution, crime (#1 in cities with a population over 1 million), poverty, and any other social woe you can think of that comes with living in a city.
We also have Dealey Plaza (highly recommended if you ever visit).

In traffic, sprawl and pollution, it meets or exceeds those cities.
It is comparable to LA (or altanta) in terms of being a car-oriented city, but falls far short in terms of arts, culture, history, size, or the other aspects one associates with the cultural importance of LA, Chicago and NY.
It does have its assets, mind you - I am by no means bashing Dallas. It has some very nice neighborhoods, restaurants and nice people, but it is not in the same league as those 3 (San Fran is the only one I would add to the club).

Depends on what you're looking for. Overall the DFW area is a good place to live (and definitely more affordable than LA, NY or Chicago), but it doesn't have a lot of the cultural options that you'll find in NY or Chicago. It doesn't have a beach or waterfront to offer. But it does have things all its own to offer.

I live in Dallas, born and raised, and it's boring. There's really not much to do unless you like to drink or just go out to eat a lot. There are the art places but how many times do you want to look at the same thing over and over again?

I live in th metroplex, and trust me, it is nothing like the above mentioned cities. The other three are tourist destinations, whereas you would have to drag people to visit dallas. Its a sprawling metroplex. with little points of interest besides eating shopping. How original
