Oooooh I'm so jealous. Take as much as you can afford you can have a good time in Amsterdam no matter how much money you have. As for what to do it depends what you are into. The Van Gogh museum is fabulous and it is next door to the Rijk's museum which is brilliant. If just watching your world go by is your thing there's a fabulous cafe on the corner of Dam square next to the Krasnapolski hotel. Near to there is a brilliant little cheese shop and also a Geneva gin bar called wynand fockink in the alley behind the cheese shop. If food is your thing find the V & D department store their food hall is to die for.

You could also take a boat trip around the canals.

If you want an extremely moving experience you could visit Anne Frank's house.

New years eve has a lot of parties in Amsterdam. For a lot of them you need to get tickets in advance at the place. On the Damsqaure there will be a huge stage with music and fireworks at midnight.
It's usually great. Drinks and food are the only thing to purchase. On new year's day most places are closed, especially stores, am not sure about the museums, but there is a big chance. If not having a hotel, do so fast, because a lot of people do come out to Amsterdam. For your expenses, expect about 300 $. I lived there.

The Rijksmuseum is pretty cool, and so is the VanGogh museum. Downtown Amsterdam is the red light district, and also has cafes that sells marijuana, but beware the splits also have tobacco in them...pretty rough on your lungs. Even though you're going with your family, everyone will want to see the red light district. Going for a tour of the city by canal is very much fun, unless it's raining which is a good possibility this time of year..be sure to pack an umbrella..money wise 125 Euros would be plenty. One Euro equals 1.24 US dollars.
