Drummer Bill Berry left the band around 1997-98.
On August 31, 2006, Michael Stipe appeared on BBC1's Breakfast program to give a brief interview, during which he mentioned that the band were to meet in the studio in September 2006 to commence work on the next studio album.
On September 16, 2006, the band, including Berry, performed during the ceremony to honor their induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. While the group rehearsed for the ceremony, it was "considering recording something for a yet-to-be-announced charitable project," according to a post from manager Bertis Downs on R.E.M.'s website. This will mark the first time Berry has worked with the band since his departure almost a decade ago.
R.E.M. was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October, 2006, in their first year of eligibility.
