Hi, I have just bought a lap top which is wireless enabled & it automatically connects to neighbour s internet connection. Assuming that my neighbours are not computer experts & are using just wireless internet connection, can they identify my computer (by name... just the way I see them on available wireless connections) everytime I connect to internet via their network ?
Also if I am connected with neighbours internet how can i prevent them from hacking (if someone actually can ) into my computer & accessing my files on it.

No, I don't think that they can view your name, especially if your name is not the name of your computer. My reasoning for this is because it is their NETWORK that you are seeing the name of, and not their computer.

Your neighbors can see you when you are connected to their network, just like you can see them.

And to answer your second question, yes, if someone hacks into the wireless networks, ALL computers connected to that network are at risk.

You should really go and get your own ISP. If you grow to depend on your neighbor, it would be disruptive if ( when ) they decide to shut it down or if they start encrypting it.

don't share your documents and have a password on your computer. if you need more security get a free firewall. If they are computer expert, they can track what you are doing on the internet.
