Not too long ago there was a commercial of a boy and girl in a car and a "ghost" walked toward their car. The "ghost" was actually showing them a site to get about american history. I believe the site was Americanhistory.org. Be sure and use the name .org for best results. Best of wishes to you.

depends how far back. talk to older people who have lived through a specific period of time, there are still WWI and WWII veterans, Korean War Veterans, Viet Nam veterans alive. start with these then there are numberless sources through museums, books, film, records, newspapers, Internet access, etc.
