Most elevators have a light with an arrow outside of the elevator pointing either up or down to let you know which direction it's moving.

Most elevators have an indicator above the elevator door that either shows an up arrow or a down arrow. This may vary from building to building. Hope this helps!

Outside the doors, many elevators have an idicator (an arrow for example) that illuminates either pointing up or down. In others it shows a number of what floor its on (like in many hotels). If there is no such indicator then you're flat out of luck.

This is a good question.
Surprisingly, a little known fact even though many of us experience this every day - even before the elevator arrives, a single "DING" signifies the car about to stop at your floor is going up, while the double "DING-DING" signifies a car on the way down.
There may be some exceptions, but this is generally true worldwide! Try this question on your friends next time!!!

Use The Force.
Don't pay any attention to that little thing with the lights above the elevator.

Just in case this isn't a joke...
It depends on the elevator. Some have signs that tell you where they are, some don't. Some will tell you what floor it's on. Some will tell you if it's heading your way. Some don't tell you anything.
So, what's the punchline?

You usually can't, but some upscale buildings have a big display that shows which floor all the elevators are currently on.

stick your finger in between the door far enough until you feel some very sharp pain. pull finger out of door and see what direction your broken finger is pointing. If it's pointing up , then the elevator is going up. If your finger is pointing down, then the elevator is going down.
