I am at 27 weeks, 3 days pregnant with my first child and I am having a boy. Well my next appt is at 29 weeks since 28 weeks would be Christmas and my OB is out of town that week, I am actually out of town myself. So my 29 week appt is on Jan 2nd and it will be the checking for Diabetes. I have been told to eat/drink no sugar on that morning and it is also best to avoid it the night before just so I am safe!

Well what happens after the 29 weeks, since I have the appt every 2 weeks from then on? When do the internal exams that the OB does start? Does the Dr have to conduct an exam for every woman, and do the exams hurt? I am not a big fan of pap smears or the cervical cultures, so in this case what are we tested for and does it hurt?

Thanks!

Once you start going every two weeks the doctor ususally will do an "internal" exam to see if the baby's head is in position to be born. Then she will also check to see if you have dialated any, etc. Trust, these exams are the least of your worries. Once you go into labor they might sick their whole hand up there to feel the baby's head. Just being honest. There's a lot that happens to a woman throughout and during pregnancy. I've had two and there are some things that you just have to experience to understand where I'm coming from. Good Luck. It's definitely no walk in the park and afterwards you will have no shame!

I have found out that every doctor is different so the best way to get a good answer is to ask your doctor. But I can tell you from personal experience that while the internal exam isn't a day at the beach, it isn't painful, just not pleasant. And probably around 35 weeks you will start going weekly. Just because your doc is out of town though, doesn't mean you can't get answers. I am sure the staff knows the routine and they can answer your questions.

The internal exams don't start until you are really close to your due date. They are a little uncomfortable, but if you don't want to have them, just tell your Dr. no! All they do is see if you are dilating, and even if you are it isn't necessarily a good predictor of when you will go into labor. (I was between 2-3 centimeters for 3 weeks!)

During the last month, you will probably go once a week. Good luck!

I', 36 weeks now and my doctor did cultures at 34 weeks. Every doc is different I'm going to be seing her every week now and I've been told that unless I'm feeling any contractions or cramps of any sort that I won't have vaginal exams until about 38 weeks. Don't be shy it's natural to be embarassed but trust your doctor has seen it all and they aren't as critical as we think they are relax and think about the beautiful baby you're nurturing and forget about being shy. Good luck :)

Internal exams are both uncomfortable physically and uncomfortable emotionally. I would sweat I would be so nervous!! However, the Dr. is just doing his or her job so don't worry about being embarrassed. Also, if you're physically uncomfortable tell your Dr. He/She can try to be more gentle or use more lubrication etc...

And of course get used to having people around down there! When it's time to deliver you'll have lots of people checking down there to make sure everything is going ok!

Good luck!

Usually the exams don't start till the 36 week and up untill then just your usually appt, unless you start having contractions, then you will probably get a nonstress test too.

They have abook , what to expect when expecting. it goes month by month and tells you what to expect at each appt. A GREAT investment. you can it is anywhere.
They do more than to see if you are dilating by the way. They test for GBS, and other things as well. Those exams are necessary
