Every year I look so forward to Christmas and all of the beautiful decorations that go along with it. I love having my Christmas trees (yes, that is right "trees") up and all of the pretty lights. Everything seems so dark and depressing to me when I take all of my decorations down. Does anyone else get the blues like this when Christmas is over?

Punk Queen - This was not a religious question. I do understand the CHRISTmas is not about the decorations. I just like them and they make me happy. Why is it you have turn my question around and make me sound like a sinner for liking Christmas decorations?

Most people who suffer from seasonal depression get depressed even before the holidays start! It's too stressful for some, and there's a lot of pressure for others. Also, the holidays can remind people of bad times in the past, or the general weather can be upsetting.

The purpose of the trees and lights stretches back thousand of years, even before Christianity began, as a way to provide hope for the upcoming spring. They knew that this was the darkest time of the year, and the trees stayed up a few weeks passed the Winter Solstice. (I think at least 12 days.)

Leave you trees up and keep turning on your lights if it will keep you from being depressed.

I used to. But what I do is, I don't take the tree down until it's totally brown and the needles have dropped off (usually around april). By then it's Easter and you have another holiday to celebrate! And make sure to keep your lights up until at least March.

That keeps me from being depressed.

yes, i think it is common. It's common for ppl to get depressed or just bummed out after christmas.... all the excitement fizzles out. And depression is high during the holidays, 'specially for those without a family. suicide rate and domestic violence goes up too. you're not the only one.
