How much do our parents determine who we become in later life?

Parents clearly affect some of your views on life and the way you behave in younger years but there are many other influences on us which affect our behaviour and views. The idiot who suggests that if you have gay parents you too will be gay is totally wrong. I know a gay and a lesbian who had a child and he has certainly not grown up to be gay - more's the pity since he is gorgeous!

No I do not think parents determine who we are attracted to. This comes out of your own interests and your own heart. Gay or straight parents may raise gay or straight children. A parent allowing too much or too little freedom may raise gay or straight children. I do not think parents' actions can define sexuality.

However, I do think they shape our personality and opinions quite a bit. Many children, in their teens, 20s, 30s, can see themselves becoming more like their parents. For example, have you ever seen the movie Breakfast Club? The students take on traits from their parents (the boy of an angry father is also angry, the boy with the over-loving parents is quiet and geeky, the girl with the rich parents acts refined).

They defintely affect who you become. They don't make you gay per se but they do have an affect on your personality. A lot of people live in denial about how much they are like their mom or dad. Genetics determines a lot of who you are and your personality. They are dscovering more and more ways that genetics determines your outcome.

A lot I think, as far as basic character traits go. I was taught never to lie or steal or be racist...and I'm still living my life like that..but I think children also learn by example..so that your parents actually have to practice what they preach. That's not to say that as an adult you can go about blaming your parents for who you are...there comes a time in everyones life when they have to accept responsiblity for their own actions.

I think it has an effect, but the results can be different on how your parents appear to you.
I don't know if it is true that if you parents are gay, you will be gay or confused??
No parents are perfect though and we all end up individual, and the same old sheep at the same time, I'm confused now...!.

well i ain't got a clue about sexuality, the most loving couple i met had a daughter and son who were gay, as regards of the way a child behaves in life, well that's down to the parents and upbringing

Not much, only by their life lessons and teaching us how to behave. But as far as "Who" we are, not a whole lot.

If it were up to my parents I would have gone to college only to elope and become the sullen wife of a plumber.
(regardless if the plumber was male or female)

Thankfully I'm not sullen, never eloped and my partner is NOT a plumber! hehehe
