daughter is almost 6 months, I stopped breastfeeding about 3 weeks ago. I feel kinda guilty about it. I was so stressed out a few weeks back that I had two cigarettes. Everybody around me said that it shouldn't hurt her, but I noticed the color of my milk changed and she actually started coughing once I fed her :'( so I quit.

I feel really bad about how I ended it, but it seemed like she wasn't getting enough at feedings, she was cranky, I was cranky. Things have calmed down around here, I've even started her on rice cereal, but I really want to go back to breasfeeding her These last few months. (Formula prices are out of control!)

Anyone have any sources for my situation?

For those of you saying apply for WIC, it's not an option. Supposedly our household makes "too much" money to qualify. Already been down that route, thanks.

My sister had to go on heavy medication so she stopped breast feeding. She tried to go back using a special device it was a small tube connected to formula. It did not work for her, but she was in a lot of pain (her jaw broke) So I think she might of just given up. But I do know it is possible if your baby wants to do it. Good luck.

Breastmilk is not always best. There is new research out now and formula is becoming better and better. The benefits of formula is that you know exactly what is in it meaning how many vitamins and minerals your baby is receiving instead of relying on your own diet to provide this. Also you can monitor the flow and the amount the baby drinks. With breastfeeding you never know how many ounces the baby is getting. All of my friends and family that tried to breastfeed could not do it successfully. Either the baby would not latch on or not enought milk etc. I would definately switch doctors if he thinks pus and blood coming from your nipples is ok. Good Luck

I think you have an excellent chance of 'relactating' Since the baby is older, she knows what to do! You do have to be patient though, she will suck and there wont be much, if anything for a few days. If she will stick with it, milk will be produced. Try and let her suck herself to sleep, she wont be as demanding at that time, will be more likely to nurse an empty breast....a Lactation consultant can certainly help...call your insurance company, SOMETIMES it's covered, if it isnt, (LC's are expensive) try a local La Leche Leader, i think you can find that out on-line. Every baby is different, it cant hurt to try!

I dont think it will be possible to go back to nursing. My milk dried up after a few weeks and I was actually able to pump alot the first week my son changed his mind on wanting to eat the bottle. Hospital introduced him to the bottle and i tried nursing for the next 4 weeks but after a few i got nothing anymore. If your still producing a little I would pump often to get the supply back up. There are several places that will help with formula also. Try ur township office salvation army and catholic charities. Good luck on nursiing again.

Thers's a slight possibility you can if your a persisant mother, first you must let her suckle even if there isn't any or a little milk and keep it up as long as you can feed her the other foods as you were and just let nature take it's course only your body can tell on this one hope it works for you BUT DON"T GET ANXIOUS thats what will dry you up!! AND ask your doc for help amy y

YES!!! Call your Health Dept. and ask to speak with a CLC, Certified Lactation Consultant. Some advice I recieved was to put my baby back to breast and then pump for 15 minutes after he was finished. That helped bring my supply back.

Yes, it is called relactating. After 3 weeks I doubt you have really dried up. Just try putting your baby back to breast, and she will stimulate your supply, you will need to do this a lot, while slowly weaning from formula.

Start here and you will find all the info you need:

Yes it is. Contact the lactation department of the hospital you delivered in and they will help you! I seen them for almost a year with my girls and i was never billed so I am thinking its a free service! Or whatever insurance your DAUGHTER has should cover it if there is a charge! Good luck hon!

I won't say anything about the smoking (except shame on you for smoking!) but I won't rule it out as a possibility. Ask your doctor, as she or he may have some suggestions on assisting this process. Good luck and give that little girl some lovin!
