I'm not inviting a whole bunch of people. Just the close family members. And his pah-rah and Nanny. But is it proper to send out cards inviteing them or just call? If send out cards how far in advance??

My aunt sent out invitations for the Christianing of my cousin. I checked etiqutte rules and here is what I found

Sending Baptism and Christening Invitations
Send Baptism and Christening Invitations to friends and family who are close with the parents.
Send Baptism and Christening Invitations about a month prior to the event.
For attendants from out of town, you may want to include directions and accommodation information in the Baptism or Christening Invitation Text.
When the Baptism or Christening is a formal event, then the Invitations should include a reply card, as well as an envelope, stamped and self-addressed.

For a small christianing, I think that word of mouth would be enough but if you have a forgetful family than maybe you should send invitations (I had to send invites to mine for that reason)

Yes, cards are proper and 3 weeks notice is enough. The ones I've been to also have refreshments afterwards at the childs home.

They make invitations for christenings, so I guess that's what you're supposed to use. As far as sending them out, I'd do it maybe 3 weeks in advance.
