In college football they always think the current number 1 team is the greatest team ever. Now it's Ohio State. A year ago it was USC. On January 4 it became the Texas Longhorns (which according to CollegeFootballNews.com computer rankings is the correct answer).

In the NFL things are a little more subdued. We judge the greats with more respect for the past. I found that ESPN has a list of the 12 greatest NFL teams ever and it's pretty good, but it doesn't even include the Cowboys of the 90s in the list. WTF? Three Super Bowls in 4 years and you don't make the list? When the Cowboys were at their peak nobody could touch them. I'm not saying they're the best ever but they should've made the list.

And making the 85 Bears the greatest ever? I don't think so. Great, yes. But if you can't back-to-back you're not going to make the top of my list. So cast your votes. Everyone's eligible. But I'm throwing out all the hanging Chads (including Chad Pennington).

1975 Steelers. They followed up, beating Dallas 21 to 17 to go back to back, but the victory over Minnesota by 16 to 6 in Superbowl IX was the more impressive of the two. I won't go into detail on all of the game stats, just the firsts and records set.

Offense

- Most Superbowl rushing attempts EVER (57)

Mansfield, Ray C
Clack, Jim G
Mullins, Gerry G
Gravelle, Gordon T
Kolb, Jon T
Brown, Larry TE
Lewis, Frank WR
Shanklin, Ronnie WR
Bleier, Rocky RB
Harris, Franco RB

-(MVP)
-2nd most TD's per Superbowl (2)
-2nd most Superbowl rushing attempts (34)

Bradshaw, Terry QB

Defense

- Held Minnesota to 6 points, a testament to Pittsburghs formidable Steel Curtain
- First ever safety in a Superbowl
- Held Minnesota for the fewest Superbowl 1st downs EVER (9)
- Held Minnesota for the fewest Superbowl yards gained EVER (119)

MEAN Joe Greene DT
Holmes, Ernie DT
Greenwood, L. C. DE
White, Dwight DE - 1st ever Superbowl safety
Ham, Jack OLB
Russell, Andy OLB
Lambert, Jack MLB
Blount, Mel CB
Thomas, J.T. CB
Edwards, Glen FS
Wagner, Mike SS

Greatest single team ever was probably the 85 bears. They did some amazing things such as IIRC shutting out back to back playoff opponents. The dolphins team was great but they faced a pretty soft schedule that season.

Greatest team / franchise over the course of history? I would have to say the Steelers. So few coaches, so much stability, so many wins, and all from a small market team.

Ever?It appears as though "ever" only goes back to the 72 Dolphins. There were some pretty great teams before then, you know.Way back in 1940 the Chicago Bears were pretty good, beating the Redskins 73-0 in the NFL championship game. The Baltimore (that's right,Baltimore)Colts in 1958 won the NFL championship beating the Giants in many consider to be one of the greatest games of all time.Pick any of the mid 60's Packers teams, they won back to back championships;and who can forget the Packer-Cowboy game on "the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field"?The Joe Namath led Jets winning Super Bowl lll ?How about the 70's era Steelers?4 Super Bowl championships.
Best of all time is subjective and is only as good as your memory. Most of the teams I listed above played before the ESPN generation was born and so couldn't possibly be greatest of ALL-TIME.The greatest of all time is whoever YOU want it to be,and I want it to be the 1967 Green Bay Packers.

Pittsburgh Steelers. Can't argue with six Super Bowls. Best team in the modern era. Back in the old school, Green Bay was the dominant team. But that was a long time ago.

Although they didn't go undefeated, I bet that if you took that whatever year Dolphins team and put them up against my team, my team would come out on top. That is the 2002 New England Patriots. The first super bowl for the Pats, and obviously not the last.

The cowboys are the best. The 2nd time they won the super bowl in the 90's

2000 ravens or 85 bears, defense wins championships, especially when it scores points. I think that these two teams qualify as the best TEAM ever. SUre there was some tallented offenses back in the day but the way those two defenses worked, whew they were something. Now we are seeing something close to the ravens now but the defense is a little worse and the offense isbetter

Dallas by far, there is a reason ESPN left them off the list and it's the same reason the former Cowboy greats get shunned for the Hall of Fame, the east coast bias!!!

The 1996 Green Bay packers, if they would have kept some of there good players signed they could have won the super bowl through 2000.
