you do not need media centre. It is simply a microsoft product, which dosnt work very well. It is a "benchmark" of the standard of hardware needed in a pc, to make it act as a home entertainment device, play/record tv and music, and have a reasonably size hard drive etc.
All the "bits" of media centre, can be bought as separate software, as long as the pc is "good" enogh.
Id recommend googling media centre, to see advice on how to make your own "media centre" pc.
Basically, its just a (usually dual core) pc, capeable of playing and recording tv and music, and the ascotiated software.
Third party software, with research on doing it your self, performs leaps and bounds, above a ready made, pc with microsoft media centre. (it is just a special version of "xp" and actually uses xp pro as its core).
I have a media centre pc, its a dell, bought just for its spec (and thier finance) and i dont use the media centre menue. All i need i have, separatly, with the software from the dvb tuner etc.
Even using the media centre mene to view pictures, taken with my canon camera, is slower, more complicated, and crashes, compared to the supplied canon software, or even the basic windows picture viewer.
