Ohhh, how easy it is to let oneself fall into that trap. The safety lies in the predictability of the emotions. A person can lead a functional life in that misery but never be happy, never learn, never grow. It will not change until a person becomes pro-active with the desire for more, to feel alive, to really breathe.
