Yes, I switched from Norton to Grisoft's AVG Free 3 years ago and never looked back. Also during installation it scanned my harddrive and picked up 4 viruses on my machine the Norton didn't detect. Also my machine ran faster than with Norton.

There is no such thing as a 100% effective Anti-virus as new malware is coming out all the time. The main thing is to choose someting your comfortable with and stick with it.

AVG produce a commercial version for use in businesses, the same Virus definitions are used in the free home edition so you get best of both worlds IMHO

The best free antivirus is AVG Free. It has been rated by cNet (a highly trusted site that has reviewed thousands of items and programs) four stars out of five. It has gotten a higher score than even Norton AntiVirus or McAfee. Download it here: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1

And to answer your original question, you can, but download this and you won't have to worry about another virus again.

There is no such thing as free and if something appears to be free it will have a fine print. In case of almost all free software, the put other software on your computer that tracks what you are doing, even send spam from your computer, and often steal your identity. I would say spend the 20 bucks.

AVG is the only option for a free antivirus I know of, and it seems to work just fine.

AVG Anti-Virus Free

The other free versions of antivirus software out there are probably trial versions and won't be fully functional, or will have a time limit on how long you can use it.

If you use a free anti virus program will you have any access to any tech support of any kind? Will you be guaranteed that you will be protected against viruses, spy ware & hackers? My advice to you is to find a manged security program. I am an Internet Security Advocate with the company Invisus. You can check their website through www.invisus.com or through my web page at www.myinvisusdirect.com/Elsa
