Okay...tell him what you would like, but be willing to wait until next year to buy it.
My husband and I did a similar thing a couple of years ago.
My husband and I are both 47, been married to each other for 29 years. For our 21st anniversary I wanted a "grown-up" wedding ring. Mine had been chosen when we were 17, it is a lovely butterfly, but it looks like a 17 yo chose it. ; ) At the time I saw things I liked, but nothing that I loved (I think you understand what I mean). My sweet husband had an interim ring for me...a solitaire sapphire and a new wedding band and said that when I found what I "loved" let him know and we would get that.
Nearly two years ago I discovered what I wanted and we went together and he bought it for me and he put it on my ring finger. And I love it. (Of course being me...I had to wait until it was on sale and I had a coupon. Which made my husband laugh, but he says makes the ring better because it is typical of my being whimsical yet frugal on big ticket items. LOL)
Now...we also have three children and each one will one day have one of my wedding rings. My older daughter (27 and married) has asked to inherit the Butterfly ring, I wore it while she was growing up. Our 21yo daughter (who would have liked first choice, but knows how things work lol) will have this ring I love (she was here for the event and sees the ring as reflecting her mom in her maturing years~those are the girls words which are sweet to me). My son is 11 and he was really was pleased to be considered. Since he was born in September a blue sapphire will make a lovely gift to someone special in his far off future. ; )
If you made it to the end of this thing: Happy Birthday!

If you are tight for money, wait until after the holidays for the ring. There are so many sales that happen at the end of January. They make room for their new stock that arrives for Valentine's Day. You would not be rude to suggest that to your husband. You have been with this man for over 18 years. You would know if he would take offense to that or not. I wish you the best of luck and yes ma'am, you do deserve a 3 diamond ring. Good luck and GOD bless you.

When I wanted a new ring (a 3 diamond ring) I took the diamond from my engagement ring (a solitaire), and used it as the center stone. Then my hubby picked me out a new diamond wedding band (a simple row of channel set, princess cut diamonds). I picked out the setting I wanted for the 3 stone ring though, my hubby's hopeless at stuff like that. I would talk with him, and see what he wants to do. Have that frank discussion about the finances as well, my hubby's watching ours because our oldest is a junior in high school, and we're looking at college in the next year. Talk to him about it though, and see what he says. Good luck

The rude part might be trading in the existing ring. To your husband, that is the symbol of your relationship. Buy a new ring but hang on to the old one--you might miss it when it's gone, too.

Well, my wife's birthday was on the 19th and my daughter's birthday was on the 13th and our anniversary was on the 2nd. All in the month of December. I don't think it would be bad to ask him for the ring that you want. Go ahead... give it a try.

I think you should just suggest it like a hint (a really big hint) then if you don't get one then you can talk it over after the holidays and do it as a couple
Merry CHRISTmas!

I have to tell my husband every gift that I have ever wanted. If that is what you want, and you can afford it. Tell him what, where, and how much. Don't forget to act surprised, he will convince himself that it was his idea, my husband always does.
