I believe it is because they have a physical presence in so many states...

If you have a store in the state that you're selling to then you have to be responsible for the sales taxes in that state.

You always pay sales tax if the entity you are buying from has any office or store in your state, so when you buy on line from a large retailer -- chances are they have a store in your state and therefore have to charge you sales tax. Sometimes even when you buy from a small company on line, you have to pay sales tax if they are based in your state. Haven't you noticed sometimes in online ad they will say "California (or some ther state) residents add sales tax some%). But when you buy from a large retailer that has stores in 30 states, chances are you are located in one of those states.

Any stores that also have brick and mortar "stores" and not just on line businesses will charge tax these days.
