try silkroad...
just saw that you can't download... i suggest you try your hand with MUDD- Multi User Dungeon Dragon. It's a text base genre that use telnet to 'play'. Mudconnect.com should have something for your hardcore rpg need.

It is very difficult to find free/beta games that are actually good. The first that comes to mind is Silkroad. This game gets tiring after awhile though. There is also Maple Story which probably takes up much less space. Survival Project and Trickster are also options.
If you're willing to just get out the cash and stop being Mr. El Cheap-o then you should look into buying Guild Wars. It's emphasis is on PVP, but it allows for soloing as well as partying. You only have to pay for the game itself, there is no online fee.
You could also check out the free trials for City of Heroes/City of Villans, World of Warcraft, and Ragnarok Online (all of these 14 day trials).

If you really like mmorpgs, then you should buy Guild Wars. The original is about $20, but there is NO MONTHLY FEE. Guild Wars is often compared to World of Warcraft, but the thing that principally separates them is that Guild Wars has no monthly fee, and that WoW is more for the hardcore.
