He was born in West Covina, California but moved to Greenwich Village at a young age. He joined Theater for the New City when he was twelve, and went to Stuysvesant High School. He later returned to California, where he attended drama school at UCLA.

Grew up in Greenwich Village and graduated from Stuyvesant H.S. in New York City.

By age 12, Robbins was already a member of the Theatre for the New City, an avant-garde acting troupe.
