People claim alot of things. For this person to have any credibility he needs a police report for the stolen item. Then he can contact ebay to resolve it. You don't need to do anything.

Is this actually something that you are going through, or are you just curious? It is a VERY good question.
I imagine Ebay has something set up for this issue...you'll probably find it under the "help" section.
How would somebody find out that it was their item that was stolen and sold on Ebay? And since an item can be sold and bought all over the world on Ebay, who would you go to to press charges if it was your item that was stolen?
Sorry I didn't really answer your question, but I threw some more in, so maybe somebody else can provide more information.
Good luck!

First of all, ask for proof that it was a stolen item. If it turns out to be hot, it's got to be returned.

You should contact Ebay's Live Help and ask them what you need to do. If they are no help, you may need to go to the police. If you are knowingly in possession of stolen property, you can be held accountable, too.

If something is found to be stolen, it will be returned to the original owner. The seller should have made sure it wasn't stolen before he/she resold it to you and should give you your money back. But, as the seller didn't do step one and make shure it was legal to resell the property, he/she probably won't refund your money either. If you resold stolen property, you are guilty of a crime. You are also obligated to give the new buyer his/her money back.

if the item is actually stolen, it has to be returned, the purchase price should be refunded, but that's a separate issue. stolen property has to be returned by law no matter how much you paid for it

If the item was actually stolen from him it is still his property. It does not matter how much you paid for it - it does not belong to you.
If he can demonstrate that it belonged to him - you have to return it.

I wouldnt worry about it as long as you had no idea it was stolen its not really your fault. Its the previous owner that stole it's fault give him the infromation of the person you bought it from thats what i would do.

Ask him/her to show you proof that it belongs to them.
