Good looks does play a role in determining who gets the job, but how much of a role depends upon the professionalism of the person who gets to make the hiring decision.
Managers who lack professionalism and personal ethics, also the types who are likely to commit sexual harassment will choose candidates based on their looks compared to more experienced ones.
Studies have shown that people who have good looks, are taller, or considered "sexy", will get promoted quicker, earn more money, and have better positions than more qualified, yet undesirable-looking persons.
So what can you do if you fall into the "ugly" category? One, get your qualifications top-notch. Make sure you stand-out to the point that any employer considering you for employment would think themselves an idiot to pass you up.
Next, be very personable, approachable, and socialable. There are many ugly Hollywood actors and actresses, but their personality and ability to act gets them by. Sure, you won't see them in a starring role of the next summer blockbuster, but they can still afford a home in Malibu.
You may not be able to change the looks of your face, but you can get your body in shape, diet, exercise, and practice good personal hygiene.
The expression, "clothes makes the man" holds true in this case. Shop for clothes to always make a good impression, not look like you're trailer trash because it's cheap.
Lastly, be confident in yourself. Charistmatic people who sway hundreds of people usually do not do it on their looks, but on their confidence and that ability to instill that confidence in others into thinking they have the answers. That's how cults are formed, but other types of social circles in the company can be formed where certain people stand out in other's minds as a "mentor" or as the Joe-who-has-the-answers. This confidence is very key.

In a perfect world the lady with experience would get it, and if it were me I would hire the one with experience -- MUCH more valuable than looks. Unfortunately, there are certain people in certain businesses that believe all their employees that get any face-time with clients or customers should look like they're right off the pages of Cosmo or Vogue, and the higher-end hotels seem to follow this ideology. Have you ever seen a desk clerk at a Radisson or a Marriott that didn't have a darned-near perfect face and perfect figure (male or female)? I haven't, and to be honest with you it puts me off places like that. Give me a good old Holiday Inn or Comfort Suites with someone who looks like a regular, normal human being at the front desk...

Probably depends on who did the interviewing. Unfortunately, studies show 'beautiful people' do get better jobs, pay etc. However, if the person doing the hiring know better than to fall for a pretty face and really needs someone good - they'll pick the one with experience.

Personally, methinks it depends on the hiring man/woman. (Like she said) It could be a "Look" thing. You really don't want some ugly person representing you nowadays. (Image thing. Might "Hurt" the company.) And it does overshadow experience, which is sad. (But hey, every company needs an office "Hoe." And usually that is their downfall.) And personality will always overrule beauty. You can be pretty outside, but ugly all around. (His/her manner, speech, movement, arrogance ect.)
=)
