It depends on how long you have felt lousy. If you have been feeling lousy for a month or more then you may be experiencing a mood disorder and could benefit greatly from a visit to your doctor.

If you've only been feeling lousy for a few days or less, you may just be going through a depressive episode that pretty much everyone goes through. To get yourself out of it, do something you enjoy that isn't stressful. For example, if you like bowling, then go bowling, but don't kill yourself to get a 300 game. Just focus on enjoying the experience. After all, if the point of “playing around” isn’t to reduce your stress levels and enjoy yourself, then what is the point?

Also, make a list of everything that’s going right in your life. So far your brain (caught in a "lousy" mood) has no doubt made an extensive list of everything that is going wrong in your life. Try to shift your brain to another track that focuses on what's going well. Currently, your brain isn't giving you a truthful view of your life. It's telling you that things are worse than they are. So to give yourself a more "fair and balanced" view of your life, focus on what's going right.

Also, do what you can to help other people. When you help other people you take your mind off your own troubles and you get the warm feeling that comes with helping other people out. It's a win-win situation.

If there are awful things that are going wrong in your life right now, then stop for a minute, and see if you can reasonably do anything to change your situation. If you can, then go out and do those things. It will make you feel much better than you do right now. If you can't reasonably do anything to change your circumstances right now, then please be aware that worrying will not do you any good.

Most of all, remember: by virtue of the fact that you are a human being, you are a wonderful, complex, glorious person who deserves to feel better. Good luck!

Get a Santa suit, a black kettle (with a stand), a bell and a folding chair. Go to a Walmart and sit outside and ring the bell. People will put money in the kettle! Make sure to thank them. At the end of the day, count your loot. Feel better, right?

Or, you could read the book, "The Art of Happiness" by the dalai Lama. Or any book by him. Or just be glad you aren't homeless with no heat or electricity or running water.

If physical, see a doctor, dentist or whatever is the cause. If environment, change the environment e.g. to the sea or outdoors if you have been looking at four walls for too long. If mental, find diversions e.g exercise, hobbies. If lonely, find friends. If persistent, find a Psychiatrist. Give the dog a bone to stop it chasing its tail and going round in circles.

Clueless Nerd apologizes for a few rude uncaring people upstairs.

I think it helps to spend hours on a hobby where you can concentrate for hours JUST on that and end up with a finished product you can admire and a sense of accomplishment. You could try writing, painting, drawing, knitting, or my favorite --- beading.
