i was looking at some use cars and i happened to se a lexus IS300 for sale with a carbon fiber hood and the so called "aoutomanual" transmission. what does this mean? could it be an automatic that can be manualy shifted when the driver wants to? if so then that must be the best idea ever for a car.

An automatic transmission shifts automatically using fluid from a torque converter (Transmission fluid) and having the developed pressure act on a number of “clutches” by closing bands to change gears. There are some transmissions that will allow you to shift the gears manually and automatically. The way they work is you select the gear you want for the speed you are going and the transmissions “automatic” shift will not override the gear you want. It still uses the same basic systems to do that and is essentially the same as an automatic but reacts much like an manual transmission

I don't think there is a problem. If you abuse it by putting excess strain on the engine or redlining it, then sure you can reduce the life of the transmission, and possibly other components. But the fact it the vehicle was designed to use this feature. So you should have no problem. My Acura TL has the same feature, but if you really abuse it it will auto shift into another gear. The people who caution you about this are thinking of the very old fashioned automatic transmissions where you could force it into a lower gear. These modern cars are a different ball game.
