If you do not have any experience training I would NOT recommend starting with a youngster. I really do not know your experience level, you state that you have been around them all your life but to what extent you do not say. I've owned horses for the last 20 years and I wouldn't start a youngster without some professional guidance (because I never have). If you do something wrong it is twice as difficult to go back and fix the problem and retrain.

You really need to have an experienced trainer to help you train a horse from the start. It's not easy and there's a lot that you can do wrong that will affect the horse adversely. I've been riding and around horses since I was very young and with all of my experience, I would not feel confident taking on that challenge on my own.

What is it that you want to train the horse for? If it's just to be a riding horse for gentle hacks, that certainly would be easier than trying to train the horse for anything competative. I would definately make sure that you had some experienced help in this.

I would not recommend trying to train a horse from scratch yourself. If you know someone who's done it before, and they would be willing to help you along, supervise the training, and fine tune the process with you, then I would say that you would probably have a very sucessful (and much more enjoyable) experience.

Good luck!

I've trained a few horses, I actually take them to someone to get them saddle broke then take over once they can accept a rider. Did that with two animals and they both turned out amazing (first one I began working on when I was 11, with directions of course!)

If you're experienced then go for it, but work with an experienced trainer or better yet..board it at a stable with experienced people so if anything comes up, there are people to deal with it! I got my first baby when I was 9...as a weanling, but I had help from the woman bought from and friends who came over every day...

No. Don't do it. If training horses were easy, everybody would be a 'trainer'.

Please don't do it, unless of course you have a trainer to work with you, or the funds to bring your horse to when you run into trouble.

Why not? Just make sure you have a mentor who can lend a hand if you have questions. Remember, all those great trainers had to start somewhere.

better not do it if you have no experience, it's harder to correct mistakes
