That is a great question. I think instead of the first heavy metal bands (such as The Move, Iron Butterfly or Blue Oyster Cult) the bands who are most responsible for moving Heavy Metal into the mainstream (in my opinion) are below.
I don't think you can listen to any sort of metal music today and not hear the guitar influence of Tony Iommi in most of it, so Black Sabbath would have to be one of the three.
Led Zepplin took the blues influence and turned it into a heavier sound. So I would say that they are also probably one of the first three.
Alice Cooper was probably the pioneer of the "shock rock" genre, so I guess you'd have to throw him in as one of the first.
