2 4/5 = 14/5 3 1/3 = 10/3

Find a common denominator === 3*5 = 15
14*3/5*3 = 42/15
10*5/3*5 = 50/15

42+50 = 92 ==> 92/15
Since 15 goes into 92 six times with a remainder of 2, the fraction is made into a compound number
92/15 = 6 2/15

4/5 and 1/3 both need a common denominator. (the number on the bottom) Easiest way is to multiply 5*3. Which is 15. The rule is whatever you do to the bottom number, you have to do to the top number. Therefore, 5*3 is 15 and 4*3 is 12. ( 12/15 equals 4/5 . that is how you check your work) and 3*5 equals 15 and 5*1 equals 5. (5/15 equals 1/3 )

So now we have 2 12/15 plus 3 5/15
Total is 5 17/15 OR 5 + 17/15. Since the top number (17) is bigger than the bottom number (15), then 17/15 is more than one ( 15/15 equals 1 ). Subtract 15 from 17 equals 2. So you have one whole and 2/15. Take 1 2/15 plus the rest of your answer (5)
Put simply 5 + 1 2/15 = 6 2/15 And that is your answer.

*Convert the fractions into improper fractions:

1. take the whole number (2) and multiply it by the denominator (5) = 10 + the numerator (4) = 14. place the whole number over the denominator > 14/5

2. take (3)(4) = 9 + 1 = 10/3

14/5 + 10/3

First: find the least common denominator between 5 and 3 which is (15) >

14/5 = x/15 + 10/3 = x/15

1. first fraction: take 5 and multiply iy some number to get 15 which is (3), take 3 and multiply it by the numerator (14) = 42. replace "x" with 42

2. second fraction: take 3 and multiply it by some number to get 15 which is (5), take 5 and multiply it by the numerator (10) = 50. replace "x" with 50.

= 42/15 + 50/15

second: solve:

= 92/15

To add fraction it is best to add the whole number part separtely so you will not be having a lot of big numbers.

2 4/5 + 3 1/3 = (2+3) + (4/5 +1/3) =

5 + (12/15 + 5/15) = 5 + 17/15 = 5 + 1 2/15 = 6 2/15

OK!

This is a *common denominator* problem.

The least common denominator of 1/5 and 1/3 is 1/15, so:

2 4/5 + 3 1/3=

2 + (4/5)*(3/3) + 3 + (1/3)*(5/5)=

2 + 12/15 + 3 + 5/15 =

5 + 17/15=

5 + 15/15 + 2/15=

5 + 1 + 2/15=

6 2/15

Done!

2 4/5 + 3 1/3
2 (4/5 * 3/3) + 3 (1/3 * 5/5)
2 (12/15) + 3 (5/15)
2 + 3 + (17/15)
5 + (1 + 2/15)
The answer is thus 6 2/15

Step 1 change your numbers from mixed numbers(that is partly a whole and partly a fraction) into fractions ( a numerator and a denominator) 2 4/5 is changed by making the 2 into an eqivlaent nmber of fifths, that is 10/5 and then adding it to 4/5 to get 14/5.

Step 2 change 3 1/3 to thirds to get 10/3.

Step 3 Now since these are two diferent sized parts, ou must change them to the same size parts.

Step 4 Do this by finding a common denominator(that is a number to use for the denominator that is a multiple of each of the two denominators. for 3 and 5 this is 15. (It may seem like all I did was multiply the two numbers together and this does work although it may not give you the smallest one)

Step 5 Now change each fraction to one having that denominator
14/5 by multiplying both numerator and denominator by 3 to get
42/15 and 10/3 by multiplying both numerator and denominator
by 5 to get 50/15.

Step 6 Add two fractions together since they are in the same
parts. 42/15 +50/15 = 92/15

step 7 Change back into a mixed number by dividing 92 by 15
getting 6 and leaving the remainder as a fraction 2/15. Thus
your answer is 6 2/15

add the integers then add the fractions
The integer: 2 + 3 = 5
The fractions:
The Common Denominator is 15 (e.g. 5 * 3)
4/5 = 12/15
1/3 = 5/15
12/15 + 5 /15 = 17/15 = 1 + 2/15
The final integer is 5 + 1 = 6
The final answer: 6 2/15
