As one very smart answerer points out, the character is dead before the story starts. I hasten to call that a spoiler. Why can't we all have a civilized discourse. Even if I had given a spoiler, I think I could have kindly been advised to not continue doing that.

Believe it or not she liked the idea of killing off Adrian. She and Sylvester Stallone talked and put there heads together over a year ago and thought 'Rocky' dealing with life as a widower would be a better storyline. Here's a website where Talia Shire talks about in an exclusive interview.

Everything I've read seems to indicate that Stallone wrote out Adrian this time to help convey the sadness and loneliness that Rocky was feeling at this stage of his life. He intentionally wanted Rocky to be at his lowest point -- a lonely widower on the outs with his son who's basically broke because of mismanagement of all his earnings -- and these things are what help motivate him to get back in the ring one more time.
It really makes perfect sense since Rocky's love for Adrian has been so apparent throughout all the other movies....Losing her to cancer (not shown in the movie) would obviously be devastating to him and leave a void that he tries to fill.
I was so against this movie when I first heard about it, but the more I hear and read, the more I want to see it because it sounds like it's really decent.

Adrienne is dead before the story starts. In rocky 5,she looked ill.Maybe Talia was tired working on the rocky franchise. She wanted no part in the film so they killed her character off in the plot.
In a Sly interview, he said Talia Shire was heart broken when she found out her character was not going to be in the movie! Hard to know what to believe
added: now here about these so called spoilers thingy's. The whole story is hardly going to be edge of seat stuff is it?? Its not going to ruin the film. She wasnt in trailers... that would tell you anyway. Plus Rocky will always win in the end.. see ive spoiled that to. Ha Ha

You didn't spoil anything. I haven't seen the movie, but I knew she was dead in the movie. I saw that on a preview. I think they would have asked Talia Shire to come back, but she looks like crap now. So it was just easier to kill her off.

Maybe she had the common sense God gave her for
refusing to do this movie due to its unrealistic storyline!!
