Fractions are a part of a whole. Think of a pizza pie. If you have 8 slices in a pizza, then you have 8 out of 8 slices, or one whole pizza.

However, if you only have one slice left, then you only have 1 out of 8 slices, or 1/8th of a pizza.

Fractions are parts of whole numbers.

If you eat 1/2 of a pie, then that means the pie was cut into 2 (the denominator or bottom number) and you ate 1 piece of it (the numberator or top number).

If you eat 2/8 of a pie, then the pie was cut into 8 pieces and you ate 2, which is also the same as 1/4.

To add/subtract fractions, the denominator (Bottom #) has to be the same. (1/2)+(1/3)=(3/6)+(2/6)=5/6

To multiply fractions, you multiply the top numbers together and the bottom numbers together. (1/2)x(1/3)=1/6

To divide fractions, flip the second fraction and mulitply. (1/2)/(1/3)=(1/2)x(3/1)=3/2 or 1 1/2.

Hope this helps some.
