Believe it or not, lizards are not poisonous. They also naturally lose the tip of their tail and amazingly it will grow back, so don't feel badly because you did not hurt it.
Lizards also will "play dead" out of fear. If you've ever heard the term "playing possum" - that means something is acting like it is dead, but it is not really dead - it's just doing that so what ever predator - your dog in this case - will think it's dead and will stop trying to kill it. Does this makes sense? I'd release the lizard back outside away from any other animals. Once you do, it will go off and find shelter. This lizard should not stay with you in your home or it will certainly die. It could also be a mother to babies that are depending on it on the outside so it you keep it, the babies could die. Please release it back. :-)

It's not poisonous. There's only two poisonous lizards in North America (if that's where you are) and those are HUGE. They're larger than what you described when they are a day old....and from your description it's either a Cuban or Bahaman Anole....do a search on Brown or Green Anoles though...more sites out there listing them by those names probably.
Look for "anole" in Yahoo images to identify it and see others like it.

There are very few venomous lizards in the US. I would not worry about that.
Here is an ID site for lizards. It only works if you know exactly what the lizard looks like so I was not able to figure it out from your description. So give it a try and see why you can figure out.

It could either be a House Gecko, or an Anole. They are commonly found and are not dangerous. You can search lizard names and see if any pictures relate to what you saw to be certain.

if you live in florida or around there, then those are common, completley harmless. if you live on the other side of the world however, you may want to look into it.
