It's fine provided you aren't an anti-social person. I've done it before many times.

The key is just to find people who don't have appauling personal habits or that aren't too terribly different from you in how they live and believe and who can keep a steady job and pay rent. I'd avoid people with drinking or drug problems too for obvious reasons. Try to get to know the people a little bit first and if your instincts tell you they might get on your nerves with some little habits they have, think twice before moving in with them. Most of the time if you are considerate and an open person, you will find it's a great way to make friends in a new place and save money too.

Try this:

i think it all depends on your personality and their personality. You should definitely visit the place and talk to the person. It will give you a good idea if they mesh with your personality. Also make sure you can lock your room even from the outside if you are worried about them stealing your stuff. I've been fairly lucky when finding roommates and have always gotten along with them. It all depends if you both have a fairly laid back personality but respect each others space.
