When I was a kid X-Mas Eve was always very quiet & we didn't celebrate until the next morning after Santa came, but when we got older my sister married an Italian & boy do they celebrate X-Mas Eve. I've been invited there for the last 17 years & I really can't imagine not celebrating X-Mas Eve again, but my mom still likes to stay home & for it to be a quiet night. Which one or both do you celebrate?

As a child I grew up with Christmas eve being our night at Church and Christmas morning opening our gifts and visiting or having people in.

Then I married my husband and his family always celebrated Christmas eve. His family is huge so this in itself was a huge visit fest. Then we and our children would celebrate Christmas day and again, more visits. This usually meant tho that we drove for 2 ours Christmas eve day, and then drove 2 hours back home on Christmas Day - morning.

Now...his parents have both passed away and although the family still gather we don't travel there anymore so we have our "family" night Christmas Eve although people are more than welcome to come over...we don't go anywhere. Instead we roast hotdogs over a fire in the fireplace, open up one gift each and then watch the latest Christmas movie on DVD. In the past when the kids were smaller my husband and I would then have a few glasses of wine while we wrapped the mountain of gifts when the kids where in bed. Then we celebrate Christmas Day with visits, big meals and of course gift opening.

Many Europeans celebrate X-mas Eve. So if you are celebrating in the morning, you have a chance for 2 celebrations. My grand-children have X-mas Eve at our place, and Christmas with their Mom and Dad the next morning.

We celebrate both. Growing up Christmas Eve was the big holiday - my parents ran around like maniacs so we could see all the relatives, go to mass, eat dinner, open gifts, etc., and when we got home Santa had already come! The next day was quiet and we played with our stuff. My mother to this day can't stand anything happening on Christmas Day; now that we're grown we usually spend that day with our in-laws or with our respective spouses and children. It reduces our stress on Christmas Eve and the chaos I remember as a child. My mother spends Christmas Day taking down the tree - no kidding. :-)

Both my family is big on Christmas. My husbands family has always celebrated on Christmas eve so Christmas eve we do my husbands family traditions and on Christmas we do mine. It works out great and nobody gets hurt feelings. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

We celebrate Christmas, but my dad's family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, the whole deal) get together on Christmas Eve. I think it's so we can have Christmas day to spend in our own, smaller families though, not to replace Christmas day.

Both. My family always goes out on Christmas Eve to parties, and we do presents and our turkey dinner on Christmas Day!
