I from a small county in WV died recently and left $500K to the county chapter of the WVU alumni association. The chapter is already well funded and the community is in near ruin. Just for the sake of arguement, do you view this gift as thoughtful or misplaced? My view is that with all the other needs of the community, why throw money into an organization that helps only a few. Only about 1% of kids that go to college ever come back to live there.

It's a kind gift. If this is where they wanted their money to be then that's where it should go. Also, the alumni association for any school always does good things for the community so don't feel like this money is going to be wasted. Also, the money is also used to pay tuition or room and board for those students who can't afford it. What goes around comes around, no worries. Good luck!

Are you a director of the alumni association? Do you set policy for it? If the person who left the money to the alumni association left specific instructions for its use, you should follow them unless they are illegal. Otherwise, you try to interpret the benefactor's intent and preferences if possible.

If there is nothing else to guide you, then why not use the money for a scholarship that helps students who stay in the community? Maybe make it a loan where 20% of the amount due is waived for every year that they stay and work in your community?

If that doesn't work, can you use the money to hire graduates to do some sort of community service job? Fund a youth group, organize a community center, that sort of thing?
