Art provides the REASON for us to live

They are both essential

Without the imagination of art leaps in science would not happen. Art is far more essential than science. Although this question is like the one about the chicken or egg, which came first? Well it's a back and forth situation. There are strong arguements for both and it's merely a matter of personal perception. I suppose if you consider air and food (since that's all you need to survive really) science then that would be more essential. You could also argue that art and science are the same thing. Is it the science of art or is it the art of science? A good book to read is "Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time & Light" by Leonard Shlain...........it's about the very question you are asking. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

Art is the question. Science is the answer.

Many will tell you that the answers are more important. After all, we can point to this answer or that answer and see how those answers did, in fact, answer things. But then that is what answers do.

But if it were not for the question, there would BE no answer.

Art is communication. Art is language. All our letters come from art. All our hopes are expressed in art. Our dreams and our nightmares. Without art, we are individuals shivering in the darkness.

Art is who we are. Science is just how we do it. If I had a choice between no art and no science, I have absolutely no question which would go, even though I have devoted the bulk of my life to furthering the latter instead of the former.

Wow, good question girl. I really like KWB's response. This is a question that has so many answers, and really no answer at all. First of all, you simply can't put a value on science and the way it has improved the quality of life for humanity--the answers, cures, and luxuries it has afforded us. From a purely stoic and objective perception, science has been the cornerstone of humanity, and humanity's explosive success since its inception. When you take into consideration, however, the aesthetic aspect of life (which I consider to be the crown jewel of humanity), there simply is no better way to experience life than through art. Not only that, we must all realize that we ourselves are great works. Like you said before, every particle of life is poetic. Humanity IS art. Love, friendship, trust, compassion....these are all forms of art that are created and performed by humans, the greatest artists of all. These two institutions are not only equally integral, they are forever entwined and conjoined. If you ask any artist, he will confess that art is a science. If you ask any scientistist, he will indeed tell you that science is an art. You could not have posted this question, nor could I have answered it, without the union of science and art. My scientifically born computer mates with the incomparable art of language to answer a question about themselves. That is irony at its most profound and delicious. Without taking a side with one or the other like most people here, I am going to give each equal importance to humanity. Like choosing between your father and mother, I refuse to place higher regard upon either, as art and science are undoubtedly the mother and father of modern humanity.

Neither is essential for the existance of humanity, Science is only essential for the improvement of humanity. Art is an enjoyable but non-essential perk.

Science has doubled our life expectancy over the last 300 years. Art is pleasing to the eye.

Right now, in America, art is.
Science has way too much influence on American society, and not enough on art.
Modern medical science has labeled me as "clinically depressed" for 20 years now, whereas the more accurate way of describing me would be " traumatized by parental child abuse and the lack of humanity and respect and empathy in the American people"
